Skiing legend dies in Provo

Skiing legend Corey Engen died in Provo, Utah last May 9 at the age of 90. Reports said that his death was due to complications from pneumonia.

Engen, ski-jumper and a cross-country skier was the captain of the U.S. Nordic ski team at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Corey, who was born Kaare in his native Norway, followed his two older brothers to the United States in the early 1930s. Along with his brothers Sverre and Alf, they helped popularize skiing in Utah and Idaho. Corey then became one of the first ski instructors at Sun Valley, Idaho. Aside from being a ski instructor, he also helped manage a ski area and later on became the coach of the Weber State University.

A winner of 22 gold medals in national competitions, Corey Engen was inducted into the United States National Ski Hall of Fame in 1973.
