Stowe Ski Derby Now Open
FEBRUARY 2006
Register now for one of the biggest and oldest combination downhill and cross-country skiing events in North America! The Stowe Derby will take place on February 26 with participants will racing over 10 miles from the top of Mt. Mansfield and into the village of Stowe. Nearly 1,000 skiers converge every year for this fun and competitive race.
The competition is divided into four divisions: freestyle, long course classical, short course and Derby Meister. The short course is designed for skiers ages 6 to 13. The course extends for only 6 kilometers and will begin at the Stowe Recreation Path Parking Lot. Meanwhile, the Long Course Races will compose of 16 kilometers with two divisions: skating and classical. The Skating division will start 10 a.m. with five participants setting off every 30 seconds.Moreover, the Classical Race however, will start 12 noon with the same format. Participants are allowed to compete in only one course.
In addition, the Derby Meister participants will compete in back-to-back skating and classical races with the individual skating and classical outcome added to Derby Meister results. Only 100 expert skiers are allowed to join the Derby Meister division. Pre-registration is required for all the events.
The Stowe Derby started with a personal challenge between two skiers in 1945.
